Berlin-based (but Miami-born) SpinnZinn is a pioneer of the hybrid DJ/live performance, playing highly textured techno sets based heavily around loops, layering and FX.

In today’s Traktor Tips & Tricks, he gives us a three-minute snippet of how he plays, and then breaks it down in detail for us afterwards, including how he also incorporates Ableton Live into his sets alongside Traktor – clever stuff, made a LOT easier by the gear he chooses to use.

  1. Hello Digital DJ tips , great clip and very good mapping .I have a question , can I use the mapping with only one K2 controller ?

  2. For anyone who is still looking for the Ableton Project-file / Traktor Mapping: I've just found it in the description box of another Xone96 Video of him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45v8IHkVsxg

  3. How does he apply traktor effects to each of the 4 channels here? I see that he can only assign them to the first two channels as the second 2 are the drum loops in ableton?

  4. Great to have all traktor decks + send return + ableton instruments connected to the 96 with just one cable…but the problem is that the club standard mixer is still xone 92.. so if you want to do this at clubs u have to bring ur 96 which is not really cool

  5. Lease a loft next to a freeway interchange or some obscure corner if the city, unplug from the internet, put this mixer between your decks, cdj's, laptop, whatever, and immerse yourself in, well, yourself. And if you can't get anything out of the experience and you need to resort back to emulating star DJ's like Richie, emulate Richie from the 90's for fuck's sake. More button pushing and knob twiddling does not equate to more dj skill or better sound. We need "more substance, less flash." This mixer could take you to another level. Maybe it's time to replace the pmc37.

  6. This is impressive, thank you for your advices! I have a question. As a DJ, I sometimes go for the classic, simple setup, (2 CDJs), and sometimes I prefer to build a custom set in Ableton, with pads, midi controllers, Xone k2s, to be creative. But right now I'm struggling to find a way to mix those 2 ways of djing! I try to find a way for my CDJs signal to be transformed into midi, and send that midi clock to Ableton. Without this feature, I can not begin a set with CDJs and then start a song on Ableton, because I cannot manually beatmatch Ableton to my CDJs! I can only begin my set on Ableton, and then switch to CDJs with a manual beatmatching on the CDJs, and at this moment, I can not really come back to Ableton because there's no clock from the CDJs to Ableton. So please, if someone knows a tool, a device, or a Mixer with this built-in feature to turn audio signal into midi and then send that to Ableton, I would like to hear you. Thank you!

  7. What effect in ableton is he using to change the pitch/ and it sounds like a delay of the claps- hi hats etc ??? It's like the richie hawtin effect

  8. Don't waist your money on one like I did!
My Send A,B,C,D stopped working after hardly any use!
I am extremely disappointed with this product I've been a happy Pioneer owner for the last 12 years, never had a single issue with their mixers Thought I'd try a different brand, what a big mistake. My Xone 96 broke down just after a month and a half use! I'm losing out over 3 weeks of pay as I use my mixer on weekends for DJing. Allen and Health service centres a joke. Not once have they contacted me or asked if I would like a replacement, I'm just still waiting on a part that never comes!
I must state that I am very disappointed and a dissatisfied customer I shall not be buying any more of your products in the future for sure!

  9. DJ SpinnZinn, please do us XONE:96 owners/users a big favor by sharing an updated Traktor 2 & 3 version of a K2 MIDI mapping control guide or template like the one you're using in your Traktor/Live set-up for XONE:96 demos released earlier this year. We know there's a lot of hush-hush, almost too taboo in sharing secrets but a fuller explanation of how these can work with Traktor / Ableton Live set-ups could really help users with using their mixer, XONE:K controllers, etc. – given the current Traktor situation.

  10. Wow. Can someone maybe please tell me how I can setup my Settings (audio channels and effects) in Ableton to sent the effects to channels 9/10 and 11/12 ?????

I would love to learn how I set this up exactly how spinzinn did this ?

I use Traktor on 4 decks on my xone 96. That already works now.
But I also want maschine and Ableton running on two separate channels. And of course the effects (reverb and delay out of Ableton) connected so that I can use the sents on my 4 Traktor channels. HOW??????

  11. Really fucks up the drop through 0:45 <try to act cool> and explains how to do so at 11:15
"Gives the user a freedom of expressibility"

  12. 4:12 So true! Beatmatching is getting old. Great live work! The only question is can you use Maschine Studio software instead of Traktor?

  13. great review alex, i'm quite impressed with allen & heath with their dj mixers over the years. i'm an allen & heath user and happy with the mixer I purchased from a store. I own the xone s2 rotary mixer. Now i'm looking to purchase the xone 96 mixer. and start using the xone k2 more often. but if I do purchase the xone 96 it better come with that nice t-shirt like the one you're in this video.

  14. Love the mixer! Ordered one to replace my 92. On a side note, you’re totally wrong by saying “you don’t care what music being played vs how it is played”. I could care less for all of your knobs twisting actions that produce nothing musical but a weird noises, that sit uncomfortably in the mix! Poor demonstration of the mixer imo. A great example of Andy Rigby back in the days showcasing the DB4. That was an awesome mix he put out, just with a few samples, mixing them the way it should be done. I’d rather hear 2 great records being mixed properly and enjoy that great sounding analogue 96, instead of watching you hit every possible knob on both 96 and K2s.

  15. ive been trying to build a setup like this for quyite some time using a K1 and a Xone DX but ive failed miserably… for some reason i cant get all 4 decks to send audio from Traktor > Ableton > Master Out. seems like it is a limitation on the Xone DX's audio channels since the last deck sounds like a collage of the other channels.
